Armenia Road Trip Options by Car. Route 1: Classic Armenia in 1 Day
Key stops on the route:
- Yerevan City
- Garni Temple
- Geghard Temple
- Lake Sevan
- Sevanavank Monastery
- Yerevan City
This route is perfect for your first self-drive trip around Armenia. The roads here are good, the sights are close to each other, and the scenery changes every 20–30 minutes.
In the morning, drive from Yerevan toward Garni Temple. The drive takes about an hour, and along the way you'll see beautiful views of mountains and gorges. Garni is the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia, and its architecture resembles ancient Greek style. It is especially lovely in the morning, when there are fewer tourists and the light is soft.
Next, head down to the natural site Symphony of Stones. These are huge basalt rocks that look like a giant organ. The road down is a little steep, but it is easy to drive.
Then continue to Geghard Monastery, carved right into the rock. Inside, the atmosphere is special: it is cool, and the acoustics are incredible.
In the second half of the day, drive to Lake Sevan. The road is very scenic. On the shore, you can have lunch with fresh sig fish and try local shashlik.
Be sure to climb up to Sevanavank Monastery. It offers one of the most beautiful views of the lake.
Armenia Road Trip Options by Car. Route 2: Southern Armenia and the Wings of Tatev Cable Car
Key locations on the route:
- Yerevan
- Khor Virap
- Noravank
- Areni
- Tatev
- Yerevan
This is one of the most beautiful and varied routes in Armenia. Along the way you will see mountains, gorges, monasteries, wineries and the legendary cable car.
Set off early for Khor Virap Monastery. This is where the famous view of Mount Ararat opens up. Morning is the best time: there is less haze and softer light for photos.
Next, the road winds through red cliffs to Noravank Monastery. It is considered one of the most scenic drives in Armenia. The rocks change colour with the sun, from orange to deep red.
Then stop in the village of Areni, known for its wineries. Taste local wine and buy homemade produce.
The highlight of the route is Tatev Monastery. You can reach it by the famous Wings of Tatev cable car, which crosses a huge gorge. The views here are truly impressive.
On the way back, stop at viewpoints and small mountain cafés.
Route No. 3 — Mountains, Canyons and Northern Armenia
Key locations on the route:
- Yerevan
- Dilijan
- Aghartsin
- Lastiver
- Ijevan
- Yerevan
This route is for those who love nature, forests and a sense of solitude. Northern Armenia is very different from Yerevan: green mountains, mist, pine forests and a completely different climate.
The first stop is Dilijan, often called “the Switzerland of Armenia.” The town is surrounded by forests and mountains. It is a pleasure to stroll its old streets and have a coffee with a view of nature.
Next, head to Aghartsin Monastery. The road runs through dense forest and is a scenic drive in itself. The monastery stands among the mountains and is considered one of the most atmospheric places in the country.
For a more active trip, continue to Lastiver. This place has wooden bridges, a river, rocks and forest trails. The last section of the road can be difficult after rain, so it is better to take a crossover or SUV.
After your walk, continue towards Ijevan. Along the way you will often find scenic viewpoints, home-style cafés and fruit stalls.
Returning to Yerevan in the evening over the mountain passes brings even more panoramic views and beautiful sunset light.

We rented a car for 7 days to travel around Armenia. In that time we managed to visit Sevan, Dilijan, Garni, Geghard and Tatev. The car was clean, well kept and fully matched the description. We especially liked that mileage was unlimited, so we never had to keep track of the km. The trip was comfortable and very full.

A one-day tour from Tbilisi to Armenia exceeded our expectations. In one day we saw Yerevan, Sevan and Dilijan. The guide was excellent and told us a lot about the country's history and culture.

We rented a Toyota to explore the whole country. We covered more than 1,200 km without a single problem. The roads in Armenia are beautiful, and having our own car let us stop at scenic spots without depending on excursions. Picking up and returning the car was quick and hassle-free. We highly recommend a car rental for discovering Armenia.

I went back and forth between excursions and renting a car for a long time, but in the end I chose to travel on my own. It turned out to be the best decision. In a few days I visited dozens of places that are hard to reach on group tours. The car was in excellent condition, and support was always reachable. My next trip to Armenia will be in a rental car for sure.
