Everything You Need to Know About a Sri Lanka Visa (Briefly)
🇱🇰 Sri Lanka visas are quick and easy to get online through the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system. It is an official electronic permit that almost all foreign nationals, including Russians, can apply for. The process takes only a few minutes. You fill in the form on the official website, enter your passport details, travel dates and address in Sri Lanka, and then pay the consular fee by bank card. Within 1–3 working days, a confirmation email arrives. That is all you need to board your flight and enter the country.
📄 The ETA visa is valid for 30 days from the date of entry, but you can extend your stay up to 270 days. The first extension adds two months, the second adds three more, and the third requires an in-person visit to the Department of Immigration in Colombo. The process is straightforward. You need to bring your passport, the application form, proof of payment and a photo. If you would rather skip the queues, our BigTravel visa administrators can submit your documents and handle the extension officially for you.
🧳 Before you travel, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry. This is one of the mandatory requirements. It is also a good idea to carry a return ticket or a ticket to a third country, so you can show it at check-in or at passport control. Sometimes it is not requested, but not having it can cause delays at check-in. Children need their own ETA visa, on the same terms as adults.
🌴 You can extend your visa at the Department of Immigration or online, when the system is available. Processing usually takes 3 to 7 working days. The cost depends on the stage: about 60 USD for the first extension, 150 USD for the second and 200 USD for the third. After the last extension, the total stay in the country can reach nine months. This option is especially popular with winter residents and digital nomads who spend the whole season on the island.
🚫 Sri Lanka has strict customs rules. You may bring in no more than 2 litres of alcohol and up to 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco. Importing e-cigarettes, vapes and IQOS is completely banned, and these items are confiscated at the border. You also may not bring in a drone without a special permit, and the device will be confiscated until you leave. Importing animals, plants and cultural artefacts without the proper certificates is also prohibited.
🕊 An ETA visa makes travel much simpler. You apply in advance and avoid queuing on arrival. On arrival, you simply show the approval email and your passport and receive your entry stamp. The key is to fill in the form carefully, with no mistakes in your name or passport number, or the application may be returned. Save all confirmations on your phone and print a copy of your visa to show on arrival or at hotel check-in.
💬 If your visa has expired, do not stay in the country illegally. A fine is charged for each day of overstay, and a long overstay can lead to an entry ban. It is best to apply for an extension well in advance, at least a week before your current permit expires. If you lose your passport with the visa, contact the immigration department or your country's embassy.
