Tips for booking a bike in Sri Lanka
Check your documents
To rent a bike in Sri Lanka, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with category "A" for motorcycles. Also check with the rental company whether any additional permit issued by local authorities is required.
Book your bike in advance
The best way is to book your bike in advance through the official website or a reliable rental platform. This makes sure the bike is available when you need it, and lets you choose a model that fits your budget and preferences.
Check the bike's condition
Before you collect the bike, inspect it carefully: check the brakes, tyres, lights and mirrors. Make sure the bike has no damage, and take photos of any defects to avoid disputes when you return it.
Driving on the left
Sri Lanka drives on the left, so it is important to follow local road rules. Don't forget your helmet, as it is mandatory for all riders and passengers. Protective clothing and footwear are also recommended for extra safety.
Deposit and payment
A deposit is usually required when renting a bike and is returned as long as the bike is in good condition. The deposit depends on the value of the bike and ranges from $100 to $300. Rental is paid after the bike is delivered.
Plan your route in advance
Sri Lanka is an island of varied landscapes, and some roads can be challenging for motorcyclists. This is especially true of mountain roads, which need good riding skills. Make sure your route suits the bike you choose, and factor in the distances.
