Huge thanks to Yasir and his team (the photographer and the driver) for the two-day tour. These are memories for a lifetime, and special thanks for getting us to places when there were no crowds of tourists 🙏 We saw insanely beautiful places, but for me the breakfast with elephants was the most impressive and memorable. If you're wondering whether it's worth going, definitely go ☺️

Interesting facts and more about Sri Lanka

🌿 Tea and mountains
One of the country's main symbols is Ceylon tea. It grows in the hills, where mist rolls over the tea plantations and the air smells fresh. Many travelers head to Ella and Nuwara Eliya to see how tea leaves are picked and how the famous Sri Lankan tea is made. The train from Kandy to Ella is one of the most scenic railway routes in the world, with old bridges, gorges, mountains and clouds right outside the window.

🐘 Nature and wildlife
In Sri Lanka you may spot wild elephants right by the road. They cross calmly while local drivers wait patiently. The island has well-known national parks, including Yala, Udawalawe and Minneriya, where you can see leopards, peacocks, water buffalo and many other animals. Off the coast of Mirissa you can sometimes see whales, one of the trip's most memorable moments.

🏝️ Beaches and ocean
A holiday in Sri Lanka suits anyone who loves nature, the ocean, waves and a relaxed, lively atmosphere. The south has surf beaches, the east has calm lagoons for swimming, and the west has beautiful sunsets and long sandy shores. The ocean stays warm all year round, and almost every region has its own perfect beach. Unawatuna, Mirissa, Bentota and Arugam Bay are places you will remember with a special smile.

🕉️ Temples and faith
Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country, but people respect many different religions. In one town you can see a Buddhist temple, a Catholic church and a Hindu kovil. For locals, respect, kindness, calm and karma matter a great deal. Before entering a temple you should always take off your shoes. Details like these help you feel the atmosphere of the island.

🚗 Transport and traffic
Roads in Sri Lanka are lively, noisy and full of character. The tuk-tuk is more than transport here; it is part of everyday life. Drivers are often friendly, chatty and happy to give directions. Trains are slow, but that is part of their charm: views of jungle, mountains, villages and tea slopes from the window turn an ordinary journey into a trip in itself.

🥥 Food and flavors
Sri Lanka smells of spices, coconut and freshly cooked curry. The cuisine is built on rice, seafood, roti, samosas, vegetable dishes and fragrant sauces. People eat simply, deliciously and without rushing. Almost every café serves fresh juices, and coastal stalls let you try local street food. Many travelers remember these bold flavors long after they return.

💬 People and atmosphere
The greatest treasure of Sri Lanka is its people. They genuinely want to know where guests come from and are always ready to help. Even on a simple walk down the street, someone is sure to smile or wish you a good day. On this island it is easy to feel like a welcome guest, not just a tourist.

🌞 Sun and rhythm of life
In Sri Lanka the day starts early: the sun rises around 06:00 and sets close to 18:30. The days are not very long, but they are full. Mornings are for the ocean, afternoons for tea, a trip or a walk, and evenings for the sunset, fruit and warm sea air.

🕰️ A little history
The island used to be called Ceylon, and at different times it was a colony of Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain. That is why you can feel a mix of architecture, languages, traditions and everyday habits. Yet Sri Lanka has kept its own character: gentle, bright, hospitable and very lively.

The most interesting thing about Sri Lanka is that it doesn't try to be just a resort. It simply lives its real life. Everything here is genuine: smiles, rain, tea, ocean, palm trees, temples, and time that really flows a little more slowly. Maybe that is why people want to come back again and again 🌺

Sri Lanka has a warm tropical climate all year round. Air temperatures usually stay between 27–32°C, and the ocean stays comfortable for swimming in almost any season. The best time to visit depends on the coast: the south and west are usually chosen from December to April, and the east from May to September. That means you can pick a good season for almost any kind of holiday.

Which resorts, towns and sights in Sri Lanka should a first-time traveler include in their itinerary?

If this is your first time in Sri Lanka, combine beach time, tours and day trips and visits to the hill country. Popular places include Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota, Hikkaduwa and Arugam Bay. To get to know the culture and nature, make time for Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya, tea plantations and one of the national parks. This route helps you experience the island more fully.

Which accommodation is best for a comfortable stay in Sri Lanka, and how do you find really good deals?

Sri Lanka has accommodation for almost every budget, from simple guesthouses and apartments to villas and oceanfront hotels. The right choice depends on your goals: small, cozy hotels suit a relaxed holiday, while it is easier to stay near the main sights for a packed itinerary. To find good offers, travelers usually book ahead, especially in high season. Help from a travel advisor can also save time and quickly find a package that fits your budget and wishes.

How much money should you bring to Sri Lanka, and which currency is used for shopping and services?

The official currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Many travelers bring US dollars, which are easy to use on the island. Big cities, hotels and tourist areas often accept bank cards, but for cafés, markets, transport and small shops, it is best to carry cash.
