The next stop is the Golden Temple in Dambulla, one of the most important Buddhist temples in the country. After the cultural part, you go to a spice garden, where you walk among fragrant plants and learn how local spices are grown and used: cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, turmeric and more.
The day ends with the climb to Sigiriya or Pidurangala, your choice. Sigiriya is the legendary "Lion Rock", on top of which are the ruins of an ancient fortress and the palace of King Kassapa. The climb takes about an hour, but the view from the top is worth every step. Pidurangala is the alternative: a less famous but equally beautiful rock opposite Sigiriya. It offers a perfect view of Sigiriya itself, especially at sunset. The climb is a little less touristy but still requires a reasonable level of fitness.
