NEXT LEVEL SURFING
TERRITORY OF GREEN WAVES
THEORY AND PREP

We start with a short lesson on land: stance, safety, take-off technique and working with the board. Even if you have no experience, no special preparation is needed. Everything is explained in simple language.

Then we head into the water and out to the foam, the area where the wave has already broken and moves in a gentle, safe flow. On the foam, beginners learn to catch a wave, stand up on the board and keep their balance, an ideal stage for a confident start. For those who have surfed before, we offer a trip to the line up, further from shore, where green waves form. They roll smoothly, give more speed and let you practice your first turns and long rides.

Lessons build up gradually. In the first lesson we use a soft 8'6 softboard for stability, in the second a more maneuverable 7'6 board, and in the third you make your first attempts on a shortboard, a light performance board for the next level. The best conditions are in the morning from 08:00 to 11:00 or closer to sunset, from 16:00.

Surfing in Sri Lanka is possible all year round thanks to stable weather. Lessons suit adults and children from 7 years old. Instructors are experienced surfers with an international lifeguard certificate from the National Body for Life Saving and Water Safety. At our school Lahi Booking Centre, no student has failed to stand on a wave. We teach gently, safely and with an individual approach, so you are guaranteed fun and progress.

A brilliant bay for first-time surfers. We took lessons with an English-speaking instructor and were standing on the board within 3 days. The water is warm, the bottom is sandy, and falling off is no big deal. The beach is wide and not crowded. In the evenings there are lanterns and barbecues on the sand. The best breakfast was at a small café with a smoothie bowl and fresh tuna.

The guesthouses are clean, the hosts are friendly and everything feels homely. A scooter is a must: the beaches nearby look like postcards, and shop prices are lower than at the popular resorts.

Ivan

The best time is December to March, with steady waves and bright sunshine. Between seasons there is more rain, but fewer people and better prices. The railway runs close by, so you may hear trains now and then. The sand is damp in the evening, so bring a mat. Still, for the waves and atmosphere, many guests keep coming back.

Frequently asked questions about Mirissa

When is the best time to visit Mirissa for a holiday, to enjoy perfect weather, warm sea, minimal rain and the most comfortable conditions for beach time, tours and day trips and walks?

The best time for a holiday in Mirissa is the peak tourist season from November to April, when the south coast of Sri Lanka has its most comfortable and predictable weather. During this period you can expect mostly sunny days, the humidity is easier to bear, and rainfall is much lower than in the summer months. Air temperatures usually stay between 28–32°C, and the water in the Indian Ocean is around 27–29°C, so you can spend hours enjoying beach time, swimming and boat trips. The sea is also calmer more often in this season, which suits whale watching, beginner surfing and boat trips. From May to October it rains more often, the ocean becomes rougher with strong waves and currents, so the stay may be less comfortable, although hotel and accommodation prices are usually lower.

How much money should you bring to Mirissa for a week or two, if you want a good hotel, good food, tours and day trips and no compromises?

Your holiday budget in Mirissa depends on your habits, comfort level and how busy your plans are. If you choose budget accommodation, such as guesthouses or affordable apartments, eat at local cafés and rarely book tours and day trips, you can manage on about 50–70$ a day per person. If you want a good 4★ or 5★ hotel, dinners at nice oceanfront restaurants, seafood, surfing lessons, a safari and boat trips, plan for 100–200$ a day. For a week-long holiday, a comfortable budget is about 700–1500$, and for two weeks it is from 1200 to 3000$, not including flights. Also allow for extra costs such as souvenirs, insurance, tips, scooter rental, transfers and shopping.

Is it true that you can see whales, dolphins and other marine animals in Mirissa, and how likely are you to spot them on a tour?

Yes, Mirissa is one of the best-known places in the world for whale watching and dolphins, especially on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Visitors most often see blue whales, the largest animals on the planet, as well as sperm whales, baleen whales and large pods of dolphins. Your chances are highest from November to April, when the ocean is calmer and tour boats can go further out to sea. The chance of seeing marine animals is quite high, but it always depends on the weather, the season and luck, as this is wildlife. A tour usually costs 25–60$ per person, and VIP tours or private trips may cost more. A tour lasts on average 3–5 hours, so bring sunscreen, a hat and seasickness tablets.

Is it safe to swim in Mirissa? Are there dangerous currents, big waves, sea urchins or other risks for tourists?

You can swim in Mirissa, and many travellers find the local beaches very beautiful and pleasant. However, the ocean is not always calm. In some areas there are strong undercurrents that can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers, especially in the wave season. In peak season the ocean is usually calmer, but even then it is important to watch the warning flags and follow the advice of local lifeguards. Sea urchins sometimes live near the rocks, and at certain times of year jellyfish may appear, so it is best to swim in well-known spots. Families with children often choose calmer bays or nearby Weligama, where the entry into the water is gentler.

Can I rent a motorbike, scooter or car in Mirissa, and what should a tourist know about local traffic?

Yes, renting a motorbike, scooter or car in Mirissa is very popular with travellers, as it lets you explore the south coast at your own pace. A motorbike costs about 6–12$ a day, a good scooter about 10–15$, and car rental starts at 30–70$ a day. An international driving permit is recommended, although some rental companies hand over vehicles without one, which can cause problems if the police check your papers. In Sri Lanka traffic drives on the left, roads can be narrow, and local drivers often overtake unpredictably, so new riders should take extra care. Always wear a helmet, check your insurance and take photos of the bike before you rent it.

What local dishes should you try in Mirissa, and how expensive are the cafés and restaurants?

Mirissa has plenty of cosy cafés, restaurants and beach spots serving both local and European food. The most popular dish is rice and curry: rice served with several curries, vegetables, fish or chicken. Also try hoppers (thin, crispy pancakes), kottu roti, fresh seafood, grilled tuna, prawns, squid and tropical fruit. Local cafés are inexpensive, with dishes at 3–7$. Seafront restaurants average 10–25$ per person, and a seafood dinner with drinks can cost 30–50$. Many places offer candlelit dinners right on the beach.

How good is the internet in Mirissa, can you work remotely there, and which mobile operator should you choose?

The internet in Mirissa is good enough for calls, video, social media and even remote work, especially if you choose a good hotel or villa. Most cafés, restaurants and guesthouses offer Wi-Fi, but speed can vary with the number of guests and the time of day. The most popular mobile operators are Dialog, Mobitel and Airtel Lanka, and a 20–50 GB data package costs only 5–15$. If you work online, a local SIM card or eSIM is the best way to stay connected. A 4G network is usually enough for video calls and downloads.

Which tours, activities and scenic spots should you not miss in Mirissa and nearby?

Mirissa offers plenty for nature lovers, ocean fans and active travellers. The most popular activities are whale watching, surfing, snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding and boat trips. Don't miss the famous Coconut Tree Hill, which has stunning ocean views, and Secret Beach, a quieter spot. Many travellers take a safari in Yala or visit Udawalawe National Park to see elephants, leopards and exotic birds. Day trips to Galle, Weligama, temple complexes and tea plantations are also popular.

Do you need a visa to visit Mirissa, how much does it cost, and how do you apply yourself without a travel agency?

Most nationalities need an ETA tourist visa to visit Mirissa. You can apply online in just a few minutes. The permit is usually valid for 30 days, and you can extend it once you are in Sri Lanka. The fee is usually 50–60$, and bank charges may apply. You will need a passport, your flight details, your accommodation address and a bank card. It is best to apply 3–7 days before departure, although approval often arrives sooner.

What should you pack for Mirissa to stay comfortable, safe and avoid unnecessary spending on the spot?

When packing for Mirissa, plan for hot, humid weather and strong sun. Bring SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat, light clothing in natural fabrics, swimwear, sunglasses and comfortable sandals. For tours, pack trainers, insect repellent, a small first-aid kit, travel insurance and a waterproof phone pouch. If you plan to rent a bike, don't forget your international driving permit. It's also useful to carry cash in USD or EUR, as cards are not accepted everywhere, and a plug adapter if your plugs don't fit.
