Surf Lessons in Weligama and Mirissa
Key route locations:
- Tuk-tuk to the beach
- Weligama Bay / Mirissa Beach
- Line-up zones
- Beach training area
- Transfer back
We start with a short land-based lesson: stance, safety, take-off technique and how to handle the board. Even if you have no experience, no special training is needed. Everything is explained in simple terms.
Then we head into the water and paddle out to the whitewater, the stretch where waves have already broken and roll in with a gentle, safe flow. Beginners practise catching waves, standing up on the board and keeping their balance, a perfect step for a confident start. If you have surfed before, we take you out to the line-up, further from shore, where green waves form. They roll in smoothly, give you more speed and let you try your first turns and long rides.
Lessons build up step by step: in the first lesson we use a soft 8'6 softboard for stability, in the second a more manoeuvrable 7'6 board, and in the third you make your first attempts on a shortboard, a lightweight performance board for the next level. The best conditions are in the morning from 08:00 to 11:00, or closer to sunset, from 16:00.
Surfing in Sri Lanka is possible all year round thanks to stable weather. Lessons suit adults and children aged 7 and up. Our instructors are experienced surfers with an international lifeguard certificate from the National Body for Life Saving and Water Safety. At our school, Lahi Booking Centre, no student has yet failed to stand up on a wave. We teach gently, safely and with an individual approach, so you get fun and real progress.

A perfect bay for your first waves. We took lessons with an English-speaking instructor and stood on the board within 3 days. The water is warm, the bottom is sandy, and falling isn’t scary. The beach is wide and not crowded. In the evenings there are lanterns and grilling on the sand. The best breakfast we found was at a small café with a smoothie bowl and fresh tuna.

The guesthouses are clean, the hosts are friendly, and everything feels homely. A scooter is a must: the beaches nearby look like postcards, and shop prices are lower than at popular resorts.

The best time was December–March, with steady waves and bright sunshine. In the off-season there is rain, but fewer people and better prices. The railway is close, and you can sometimes hear trains. In the evening the sand is damp, so bring a mat. But for the waves and the atmosphere, we’re ready to come back.

Frequently asked questions about Weligama
How do I get from Colombo airport to Weligama, and how long does the trip usually take, including traffic, the type of transport and possible stops along the way?
There are several ways to get from Colombo airport to Weligama, and your choice strongly affects comfort and travel time. The fastest and most convenient option is a private transfer or taxi, which usually takes about 2.5–3.5 hours, but in rush hour or heavy traffic it can stretch to 4 hours. On the way, the driver often stops at petrol stations or viewpoints, which adds time but makes the drive less tiring. A more budget-friendly option is the train or bus: a train to Matara and then a tuk-tuk to Weligama can take 5–7 hours, but it lets you see the coast and local life. Buses are the cheapest option but less comfortable, especially with luggage and after a long flight.
When is the best time to plan a trip to Weligama in terms of weather, surf conditions and the overall tourist season, so you can enjoy a comfortable break without heavy rain and crowded beaches?
The best time to visit Weligama is from November to April, when the south coast enjoys the dry season. During this time the ocean is calmer, the weather is stable, there are plenty of sunny days, and there are almost no long spells of rain. This is also when conditions for surfing are considered ideal for beginners: the waves are even and predictable. From May to October is the rainy season, but that doesn’t mean constant downpours. More often there are short showers and emptier beaches. At this time you can enjoy a more secluded stay and sometimes better prices for accommodation. The right season depends on your priorities: comfortable weather or a calm atmosphere without crowds.
Is Weligama suitable for beginner surfers, and are there schools, instructors and safe conditions for learning on calm waves?
Weligama is considered one of the most beginner-friendly places to try surfing, which is why newcomers come here from all over the world. The bay is wide and the waves are soft and long, so you can learn calmly without sudden breaking waves. Along the beach there are many surf schools with English-speaking instructors, and all the necessary equipment is provided, including boards and lycra suits. The first lessons usually take place in waist-deep water, which makes learning quite safe, even for those who have never stood on a board. After just a few lessons, many people start to catch small waves confidently and enjoy the process.
How much money do you need per day in Weligama at a mid-range comfort level, including accommodation, food, transport and small treats?
The average daily budget in Weligama for a comfortable stay is usually around $50–100 per person, but the range can be wider depending on your travel style. Most of the cost goes on mid-range accommodation, which can be from $40 to $70 per night, especially if you choose a hotel near the ocean. Eating at cafés and restaurants usually costs $10–25 a day if you mix local and tourist cuisine. Transport and short trips by tuk-tuk add a few more dollars, but they remain relatively inexpensive. Extra spending goes on surfing, tours and day trips or massages, and these are usually what increase the total budget the most.
Is Weligama safe for tourists, especially if you travel alone or plan late evening walks along the coast and tuk-tuk rides?
Weligama is generally considered a fairly safe resort, especially by the standards of popular tourist destinations in Asia. The atmosphere is calm, and local people are used to visitors and are usually friendly and low-key. Solo travellers, including women, usually feel comfortable, especially in tourist areas and near the beach. Basic precautions still matter: don't leave belongings unattended and use trusted tuk-tuks or transfers. Evening walks along the central stretch of beach are usually quiet, but avoid going to very isolated spots. Overall, the level of safety is comfortable for a relaxed holiday.
Does Weligama have proper facilities for tourists, including cafés, shops, pharmacies, internet and ATMs, or is it a more "wild" place without amenities?
Despite its laid-back atmosphere, Weligama has a well-developed tourist infrastructure, so it doesn't feel remote or "wild". The town has plenty of cafés and restaurants, from simple local eateries to stylish spots with European cuisine and an ocean view. Supermarkets, small shops, pharmacies and everyday services are also available, which makes it comfortable even for a long stay. Internet is usually reliable in hotels and cafés, and if needed you can use an eSIM or local SIM cards. There are ATMs too, but it's best to carry some cash, as not every place accepts cards.
Which beaches around Weligama are considered the best for swimming and surfing, and are there places with calmer water and no strong waves?
Weligama's main beach is ideal for surfing, especially for beginners, as the waves here are gentle and predictable. However, it isn't always ideal for swimming, particularly on windy days, when the water becomes more active. If you want calm sea, choose spots near the hotels in sheltered areas or neighbouring bays, where the waves are gentler. Quieter beaches are also nearby, for example towards Mirissa, where you'll find stretches of almost calm water. Season matters: in the dry months the ocean is usually much more gentle and suitable for swimming and relaxing by the water.
Can you combine a stay in Weligama with tours and day trips around southern Sri Lanka, and which popular destinations are usually included in the route?
Weligama is an excellent base for travel around southern Sri Lanka, as it's very conveniently located near the main sights. From here it's easy to reach Galle and its old fort, the beaches of Mirissa, tea plantations and waterfalls in the hill country. Safaris in national parks are also popular, where you can see elephants and other animals in their natural habitat. Most tours and day trips last from a few hours to a full day, so they're easy to combine with beach time. Many travellers alternate quiet days by the ocean with active outings, which makes the holiday more varied.
Are there good spa and Ayurveda centres in Weligama, how high is their quality, and is it worth including such treatments in your holiday plans?
Weligama is known for its Ayurveda and spa centres, which offer massages, herbal treatments and recovery programmes. The level varies: there are simple local massage parlours and more professional centres attached to hotels. Quality venues use natural oils, traditional methods and an individual approach to each client's condition. Treatments after surfing are especially popular, as they help to relax muscles and recover from physical effort. For many travellers, these treatments become an important part of the holiday and help them fully recharge.
What local cultural customs and behaviour should tourists keep in mind in Weligama to act respectfully in public places and not break local traditions?
In Weligama it's important to remember that this region has a strong Buddhist culture, and local traditions are taken very seriously. When visiting temples, cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes and behave calmly, avoiding loud conversation. In everyday life, it's also not customary to dress too revealingly away from the beach, especially in small villages and public places. Local people are usually very welcoming, and respectful behaviour from visitors is always appreciated. The calmer and more considerate your behaviour, the warmer and more open your interactions with locals will be.
