Bentota at a glance

Bentota is a place where the ocean meets the sky in endless harmony, and the golden sand seems to invite you to walk barefoot, feeling every grain underfoot. Here, every step brings a sense of lightness and freedom, and the gentle play of the waves creates a quiet melody that stays with you long after you leave.

The town is full of natural beauty and greenery: palm trees lean over the coastline, and tropical plants create the feel of a secluded paradise. Along the shore you can spot fishing boats, and in the distance sunlight shimmers on the water, adding bright accents to the peaceful scene.

Bentota surprises with its cultural charm. Near the beaches you can find temples, traditional houses and craft shops where a sense of history lives on.

Bentota’s special appeal is its sense of space and freedom. Wide beaches, clear water and a light sea breeze make this place ideal for walks, meditation or simply enjoying the moment.

How to get to Bentota

It was a long layover day. I left my bags at the hotel's left luggage room, then took a quick transfer to Colombo Fort. From there I walked to the Old Parliament, then visited the Dutch Hospital for coffee and souvenirs, and took a tuk-tuk to Gangaramaya Temple. Traffic is heavy, so plan about an hour for the trip to or from the airport. A ride-hailing app saves you from haggling and gives you a fixed price. The 4G signal is stable, and I set up an eSIM in 5 minutes. Overall, the transit worked well. I got a feel for the city's character, didn't get worn out, and made my flight. Tip: mark your stops on the map in advance and leave some spare time, because traffic is unpredictable.

Colombo with a child turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The park near Independence Arcade is spacious and shady, and the museums are cool with comfortable seating areas. In the evening we walked along the ocean: kites, street snacks and music. It felt safe and family-friendly. Choose a hotel with a pool, which helps a lot at midday. Getting around is best done by app, so ask for a child seat in advance. For shopping, there are several malls with food courts and play areas. Colombo isn't packed with kid-focused activities, but it is a gentle start before an island itinerary. The key is to keep drinking water and use sun protection.

Traffic and humidity are the main challenges. You tire quickly at midday, and journeys can take twice as long as planned. The solution: schedule active stops for the morning and evening, and spend the afternoon in museums or cafés. Sometimes people offer 'help' near markets. Politely decline and keep small notes separate. By the ghats (waterfront steps) it can be windy and the spray is salty, so a protective case for your gear is useful. Colombo is not a resort. It is the beating heart and rhythm of the country. Accept that, and it opens up through its tea aromas, market buzz, sunset skies and friendly bustle.
