Ahangama at a glance

Life here moves at a relaxed pace, and the air carries the scent of sea salt and coconut palms. In the morning, the coast is bathed in soft dawn light, and the horizon turns pink and gold, creating a calm mood.

Surfers especially love this place. The waves of Ahangama are considered some of the best on the entire coast. Both beginners and experienced riders find their wave here, and many surf schools make learning simple and fun. After a session, you can enjoy a fresh coconut right on the beach and watch the sun rise above the ocean.

Besides surfing, Ahangama is known for its traditional stilt fishermen, who have become a true symbol of Sri Lanka. These figures, standing in the water on thin wooden poles, look like living paintings and reflect the island’s ancient way of life and the patient spirit of its people. Seeing them in the morning sunlight is one of the most memorable experiences.

In the evening, Ahangama turns into a cozy beachside oasis, where cafés and bars glow with soft lantern light, live music plays, and the moon rises over the ocean. You can enjoy fresh seafood, feel the comfort and freedom of the place, and simply be in the moment, surrounded by wind, waves and the starry sky.

How to Get to Ahangama

Ahangama is located on Sri Lanka’s south coast, about 160 km from Colombo and only 30 km from Galle. There are several ways to get there, depending on your budget and preferences.

We spent two weeks in Ahangama and finally felt we could truly unwind. There are no crowds, the music doesn't play late into the night, and you can hear the ocean even from deep within the village. The beaches are wide and beautiful, with palm trees, but the waves are often strong, so we only swam during calmer hours. We loved the small local cafés on the seafront. The food is simple, but the fish and prawns are always fresh. Unawatuna and Mirissa are easy to reach by tuk-tuk in 10–15 minutes. It's an ideal spot for a peaceful holiday or for working in quiet.

We took surf lessons near Kabalana Beach. The place is incredibly stylish, with lots of surfers carrying boards, but without the crowds you find in Weligama. The waves are steady and long, and the instructors deserve a special thank you. In the evenings there are almost no parties, so you can sleep well. We stayed in a small hotel among the palms. In the mornings monkeys came by, and sometimes even squirrels appeared right on the terrace. If you want a good mix of surfing and calm, Ahangama is a great choice.

We came with our child, and Ahangama turned out to be the perfect balance for us. There's the ocean, coconut palms, lots of greenery and almost no people. Some cafés have a kids' menu, and hotel owners are always helpful and very kind. We walked along the beach, watched the fishermen on their poles, fed the turtles and saw the sunrise. It feels like living in a small village by the ocean. If you want clubs and noise, this is definitely not the place. But if you want to recharge, it's the perfect spot.
